There are many Middle Eastern dishes that are famous worldwide. If you ask a person from the middle east what is their favorite food, the answer would be either hummus or Falafel. 

This widely famous food is made from chickpeas, onions, and various spices. They are fried in the shape of a ball.

Falafel is also Israel’s national dish and is considered fast food. It is served as a sandwich, inside pita bread with some lettuce leaves, tomatoes, and some tahini. It is also very famous among vegetarians.

Recipe for Falafel

Ingredients

  • One cup dried chickpea 
  • One large chopped onion 
  • Two chopped garlic cloves 
  • Three tablespoons chopped parsley
  • One teaspoon of coriander and cumin
  • Two tablespoon flour 
  • One tablespoon salt and pepper
  • Oil for frying 

Steps to Make Falafel

  1. Take all the ingredients together and drain the water from the overnight soaked chickpeas. Boil them in fresh water for about 4-5 minutes and let them boil in simmer for about an hour. Drain all the water after boiling and allow to cool for about 15-20 minutes. 
  2. Combine all the ingredients (chickpeas, garlic, coriander, cumin, salt, and pepper) in a bowl. Add flour and mix all the ingredients together with the chickpeas, making it into a thick paste.
  3. Then, make small balls of this mixture. 
  4. Fry these small balls in oil until they turn golden brown and serve hot to your friends and family.

There are some tips which you can choose to apply while making falafel.

  1. If you are short on time, you can use canned chickpeas bean.
  2. For mixing the chickpeas with other ingredients, use a food processor.
  3. You can use more flour if you feel that your mix is falling apart or not binding.
  4. For the binding, you can also use egg as a binding agent 

There Are Many Recipes for Falafel

You can make falafel with many different, innovative, and healthy recipes. For example, the low-fat baked recipe is very healthy since it is not fried. It tastes delicious with pita sandwich, tahini, and with some healthy veggies. They can also be served with hummus and tabbouleh salad.

The low-fat baked recipe is also very simple. It is the same as the fried one. However, instead of frying in oil, you have to bake it in an oven for around 15-20 minutes and turn them halfway through cooking,

These can be served with some sauce and Israeli salad.
